Introducing ARLIS/NA Upstate New York!

ARLIS Western New York is now ARLIS Upstate New York!

At the ARLIS/NA mid-year meeting on September 26, the Executive Board approved the proposal of the ARLIS/NA Western New York Chapter to change its name to ARLIS/NA Upstate New York Chapter. At the ARLIS Western New York fall business meeting on October 3, chapter members unanimously voted to officially change the name of their chapter effective January 1, 2014.

The name ARLIS Western New York did not accurately represent the location of many of the current members of the group who are in Eastern or Central New York. ARLIS Upstate New York seemed like a more geographically inclusive and appropriate name. By changing our name to ARLIS Upstate New York, the chapter hopes to increase its membership since it now encompasses the entire upstate region.

ARLIS/NA Upstate has a new logo!

A competition to design a new logo to represent ARLIS/NA Upstate was held in December and the winner was selected by members of the chapter.

The winning logo was designed by Adam Fisher-Cox, an Art major at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

“My logo submission incorporates a modern art sensibility with shapes representative of upstate New York. The three colored quadrilaterals correspond to the three main regions of “upstate” New York: The Capital Region, The Adirondacks, and Western New York. Together they form a unique shape reminiscent both of the mountains the region is known for and the shape of the state of New York.”

ARLIS/NA Western New York Chapter Fundraiser

Barnes and Noble has agreed to let our chapter host a fundraiser, which is a Bookfair. The event will take place Wednesday, December 5-7 in Syracuse, NY. In order to help us out all you need to do is to shop in store or online at a Barnes and Noble anywhere. Do your holiday shopping or buy that book you have been meaning to read! Most items qualify except the café, gift cards (though you can use gift cards to buy items), and certain software. Just mention coupon code 11229812 and ARLIS/Upstate will get 10 % of the sales to use toward enhanced programming and student awards. You can participate in this event through December 10.

Nancy Turner, Research and Assessment Analyst, Syracuse University Library
The library’s and librarians’ role within the parent institution is changing, and the accepted “value” of the library in supporting the mission of the institution should not be taken for granted. Traditional statistical metrics like volume count and circulation statistics are no longer sufficient evidence of providing value to students and faculty. Therefore, assessment in libraries must demonstrate to stakeholders the effectiveness, impact, and accountability of the library. Turner’s presentation will provide an overview of these trends in assessment, providing examples of best practices as well as challenges for librarians in meeting these new expectations.

11:00-12:00: Transformation and Abstraction Through Digital Media, Painting and Collage
Christopher McEvoy, Artist/Assistant Professor of Art at SUNY Oswego
Christopher McEvoy will discuss his creative process related to his current body of mixed media work. This work, drawn from photography and digital manipulation, is coupled with a more organic, hands-on process of transformation and abstraction through painting and collage. Through this lens, McEvoy explores our observation and understanding of the exterior world as distilled by technology and human experience. For McEvoy, this body of work “dwells in the space between abstraction and representation, and within the canvas I strive to reconcile disparate states by morphing imagery to create a hybrid pictorial reality that serves as a dialogue between the intangible and corporeal, entropy and unity, devastation and rejuvenation.”
